Boy Kills World: Movie Review

Boy Kills World is a dark comedy action movie. Takes place in a dystopian city where there is a boy whose family was killed in front of him by the goons who work for a crime family ruling the dystopian city. He is then rescued by a mysterious shaman who subjects him to a brutal regime of martial arts training so that he grows up to be a lethal killing machine to take revenge for the murders of his family members as he grows older. And now it’s the day for revenge.

The movie is a dark comedy mixed with an action-filled blood bath with a story that does enough to make you care about the characters.  The action show in the film was fun and uniquely interesting to watch like all the best action comedies. Most of the action sequences and scenes had the impact the makers were looking for us to feel and have fun while watching they did a great job blending the action with the comedy. However, Boy Kills World successfully delivers on the story and brings enough originality and more creative narrative to the old tropes of revenge that the viewer is happy to go along with things as they take increasingly bizarre turns.

The story of the film is what we have seen it all before; it’s so generic a boy loses his loved ones and wants to take revenge for the murders of his family, they even named the main protagonist just “BOY” that’s it and he is deaf with an inner monologue with H. Jon Benjamin’s suitably over the top voice. He’s also haunted by the ghost of his younger sister, who acts as his guide and moral conscience. But the execution of the story and how it progresses gives it a new look and makes it a good watch for action comedy lovers. There were several scenes where I genuinely laughed out loud.

The characters are multi-dimensional and intriguing. Bill Skarsgård delivers a stellar performance, proving he can convey deep emotion without dialogue, using just his eyes. His physical acting, combined with H. Jon Benjamin’s voice acting was a matchup I never knew I needed in my life. Andrew Koji isn’t given a chance to show off his physical prowess but is given the time to show how surprisingly great he is at comedy. There are also a surprising number of laughs, with great comedic performances from Brett Gelman, Isaiah Mustafa, Sharlto Copley, and Gotta Love June 27 as well.

Moritz Mohr’s direction expertly balances self-awareness with sincerity, effectively translating video game elements to the big screen. Peter Matjasko’s cinematography complements this approach, with the camera seamlessly moving with the action. The result is fluid and inventively bloody sequences, culminating in a spectacular final fight. This climactic battle features impeccable choreography and brutal blows, lasting just long enough to be exhaustingly exhilarating. As you’d expect, there’s also a twist at the end, but it’s twisty enough to pack a punch.

Either you are going to love the movie for its execution, interesting new take, and brilliant cinematography or you might not like the movie, but in my personal opinion I like the movie, Boy Kill’s world is stylish, fresh, funny, deep, refreshingly new, and full of surprises. The action scenes are kinetic, realistic, and authentic. The screenplay is gripping, and the movie successfully provides audiences with a sense of cinematic escapism which is why in the first place we want to watch films. However, you can switch your brain off and go long for the ride, it’s a wild and satisfying one.
